Hunting Licence and Firearms Courses

Anyone wishing to obtain the necessary qualifications to hunt in Iceland must complete both a hunting licence course and a firearms course.

Firearms Course

Firearms may not be acquired or used without a valid firearms licence. Hunting is also prohibited unless the hunter has a valid firearms licence and carries a valid hunting licence.

Hunting licence course

A hunting licence grants the general right to hunt with firearms in Iceland. Hunters must also hold a valid firearms licence.

Course registration

The preparatory course for the hunting licence examination is completed online through the SKOTVÍS Hunting School. The firearms course also takes place largely online, but includes practical training.

The Nature Conservation Agency’s online portal is used to register for both hunting licence and firearms courses. The portal also provides more detailed information on examination locations, practical training locations and dates, course fees and other relevant details.
