Protection Status
Víghólar was designated a natural monument in 1983. The area is characterised by smooth, rounded basalt outcrops sculpted by glaciers, geological formations known as roches moutonnées. Scratches and grooves preserved on the rock surface reveal the direction in which the glacier moved across what is now Kópavogur towards the end of the Ice Age.
Víghólar and nearby Borgarholt form part of extensive basalt lava fields that were created during warmer interglacial periods of the Ice Age. Together, the lava formations and glacial markings preserve a visible record of both volcanic activity and the immense glaciers that later shaped the landscape.
