Access and Information
The Gerpir area lies between Norðfjörður and Reyðarfjörður. Roads lead to Vöðlavík and Viðfjörður and are accessible to four-wheel-drive vehicles during the summer months, while the roads are open.
Protection Status
The designation of the Gerpir area formed part of a broader conservation initiative, having been identified in Iceland’s Nature Conservation Plan for 2009–2013.
The protected area is designated as a protected landscape area and holds high conservation value based on the significance of its geological heritage, landscape, recreational value, and cultural history. The area also contains extensive tracts with wilderness characteristics, as well as habitats for rare plant and bird species.
The protected area is characterised by magnificent scenery and has high recreational and educational value due to both its natural environment and cultural history.
