Access and Information
The protected landscape area north of Dyrfjöll extends from Héraðssandur into the highland areas above Héraðsflói Bay. The area features black sand shores, lush heathlands, and striking mountain peaks.
Protection Status
The area north of Dyrfjöll was designated as a protected landscape area on 2 July 2021, at the same time as Stórurð was designated a natural monument. Zoning within the protected area is shown on a map, and different regulations apply to different zones. A management and conservation plan for the area was published in 2025.
The objective of the protection designation is to conserve and preserve distinctive geological formations and landscapes of national significance due to their exceptional scenic value.
