Stekkjarhraun continues directly from Gráhelluhraun, where the lava flowed through a narrow passage between Setbergshlíð and Mosahlíð. The area is easily accessible, making it well suited for nature interpretation and outdoor learning.
The protected area also includes small wetlands along the stream that flows beside Stekkjarhraun. These wetlands support plants such as bogbean and several sedge species, which are increasingly uncommon in urban areas.
Protection Status
Stekkjarhraun was designated a protected area in 2009. The designation protects an attractive lava landscape valued for outdoor recreation, together with its distinctive vegetation and cultural heritage.
