Spá­konu­fells­höfði

Spákonufellshöfði is composed of massive columnar basalt and is thought to be an ancient volcanic plug that was later shaped and eroded by Ice Age glaciers.

Access and Information

Spákonufellshöfði is located west of the settlement of Skagaströnd and extends down to the shoreline. Offshore skerries adjacent to the headland also form part of the nature reserve.
A parking area is located at the end of Einbúastígur in Skagaströnd, from where hiking trails lead through the headland. A trail map is displayed on an information board at the parking area. A birdwatching hide is located along the trail.
Management and operation of Spákonufellshöfði Nature Reserve are the responsibility of Skagaströnd Municipality.

Protection Status

Spákonufellshöfði Nature Reserve was designated in 1980. The nature reserve covers an area of 22.5 hectares.
The objective of nature reserve designation is to facilitate public access to nature and associated cultural heritage near urban areas for outdoor recreation, nature appreciation, and education.
