Snæfellsjökull National Park was established on 28 June 2001 and, as of 1 January 2025, forms part of the Nature Conservation Agency of Iceland.

The national park encompasses Snæfellsjökull glacier and its surrounding coastal area of influence. National parks are protected areas recognised for their unique natural features or historical significance.
