The Skerjafjörður area supports a remarkable diversity of birdlife throughout the year. It is an important stopover for migratory birds travelling to and from northern breeding grounds, providing vital places to rest and feed along their journey.
Rich seaweed shores, mudflats and shallow coastal waters provide abundant food, supported by a diverse community of marine life on the seabed. Skerjafjörður is of international importance for species such as red knot and brent goose. The area is also important for eelgrass, which has a limited distribution in Iceland and is one of the main food sources of brent geese.
With its rich birdlife, diverse coastal habitats and easy access, Skerjafjörður offers excellent opportunities to experience nature close to the city. The shoreline is popular for walking and outdoor recreation, while the sheltered waters of the fjord are enjoyed for recreational boating.
Protection Status
Parts of Skerjafjörður within Kópavogur and Garðabær were designated as protected habitats in 2009 and 2012. The purpose of the designation is to protect the rich coastal and shallow water ecosystems of Skerjafjörður, particularly its important bird habitats, while preserving opportunities for visitors to enjoy and learn about the area.
