Reykjanes Nature Reserve is a landscape shaped by volcanic activity and geothermal forces. Geothermal areas and a wide variety of geological features are found throughout the protected area, while hyaloclastite mountains and table mountains in countless forms give the landscape much of its distinctive character.
The Eldborg undir Geitahlíð Natural Monument lies within the boundaries of Reykjanesfólkvangur. The protected area is also home to adder’s tongue fern, a species included on the Icelandic Institute of Natural History’s Red List. It is particularly widespread around the geothermal areas north of Trölladyngja.
Protection Status
Reykjanesfólkvangur was designated a protected public park in 1975. The designation protects a remarkable volcanic landscape characterised by extensive geothermal areas and a rich variety of geological features.
