Protection status
Melrakkaey was designated as a protected area in 1971. Melrakkaey is a small island off the coast of Grundarfjörður, and the aim of its protection is to conserve the island's birdlife.
Access to the island is prohibited without permission from the Nature Conservation Agency of Iceland. To protect birdlife, shooting is prohibited within 2 km of the island.
Melrakkaey is part of the Breiðafjörður Conservation Area, which is protected under specific legislation, Act No. 54/1995.
