Stafafellsfjöll, a mountain range, valleys and wilderness east of Vatnajökull, offers diverse landscapes. Its shapes and colours intermingle with canyons and ravines, creating a truly captivating natural setting. The area is particularly vibrant with rhyolite, mineral deposits and beautiful stones. Grassy patches dot the landscape and reindeer are often spotted during hikes through this wild terrain. Protection Status
Innfjöll, Eskifell, Kjarrdalsheiði, Kollumúla, and Víðidalur were protected in accordance with the Nature Conservation Act at the beginning of 1977, with the approval of the landowners. The East Iceland Environment Association (NAUST) initiated the protection. The area is a nature reserve and is either named after Lónsöræfi or Stafafellsfjöll. Lónsöræfi is a new word not traditionally used in the area.
The nature reserve covers an area of 34,528.1 ha.
