Kerl­ing­ar­fjöll

Kerlingarfjöll rise prominently above the otherwise broad and relatively level Hrunamannaafréttur highland plateau, creating a striking landmark for travellers crossing Kjölur. The surrounding highland wilderness generally lies at an elevation of 600–700 metres above sea level, while the highest peaks of Kerlingarfjöll rise steeply to over 1,400 metres. The highest summit is Snækollur, standing at 1,488 metres. The mountain massif as a whole covers approximately 140 km², while the protected area extends across 367 km². The rivers Ásgarðsá and Kisa flow from the mountains, dividing them into two distinct regions: the Eastern Mountains (Austurfjöll) and Western Mountains (Vesturfjöll). The highest peaks are located within the Austurfjöll and include Snækollur (1,488 m), Fannborg (1,458 m), and Loðmundur (1,429 m). The Vesturfjöll are slightly lower and include peaks such as Höttur (1,312 m), Mænir (1,357 m), and Ögmundur (1,357 m).
