Katt­ar­auga

Kattarauga is an exceptionally deep pond containing two floating vegetated islets that drift with the wind. The pond takes its name from a spring vent at its bottom, which becomes visible in calm, bright conditions. A strong and continuous flow of water runs through the pond.

Access and Information

Kattarauga is located in Vatnsdalur, beside Route 722. A roadside pull-off provides parking, and a paved footpath leads to the pond.

Protection Status

Kattarauga was designated a natural monument in 1975. The protected site covers 0.01 hectares.

The objective of the protection designation is to preserve the pond of Kattarauga, its floating islets, and the surrounding pond banks.
