Access to Kalmanshellir is subject to a special permit issued by the Iceland Nature Conservation Agency. Parts of the cave system are completely closed to the public, and entry is only permitted in exceptional circumstances where significant public interest is deemed to apply by the Iceland Nature Conservation Agency and site managers.
Protection Status
Kalmanshellir, located within Hallmundarhraun, was designated a natural monument in 2011. The cave system extends approximately 4 kilometres and is protected due to its exceptional geological significance.
Kalmanshellir is the longest known lava cave in Iceland. The cave is highly diverse in character, alternating between large chambers and narrow passages, with numerous surface openings throughout the system.
The purpose of the protection designation is to preserve the cave’s unique geological formations and the integrity of the entire cave system, while preventing damage to its fragile natural features.
