Kaldárhraun is one of the last remaining examples of an intact and undisturbed pāhoehoe lava field in Hafnarfjörður and is highly valued for both outdoor recreation and interpretation. The area also contains archaeological remains associated with traditional seasonal farming, including the old Kaldárstígur trail.
Protection Status
Kaldárhraun and Gjárnar in Hafnarfjörður were designated a natural monument in 2009. The designation protects the distinctive pāhoehoe lava formations and striking rock formations within the western lava channel from Búrfell volcano.
