Access and Information
Hverfjall is a circular crater rising 80–170 metres above the surrounding landscape, with its highest point reaching 452 metres above sea level.
The crater is located in the Mývatn region, approximately 2 km southeast of the Vogahverfi area. Access is via a road leading from the main highway to the mountain.
The area is managed by local landowners, who maintain the parking facilities and restroom services. A service fee is charged by the landowners for access to the site.
Protection Status
Hverfjall was designated a natural monument in 2011. The protection designation was revised in November 2024, and the protected area was expanded in consultation with local landowners.
The protected area covers 3.78 km².
The objective of protecting Hverfjall as a natural monument is to preserve its distinctive geological formations. The designation also aims to safeguard the area’s geological features because of their considerable educational and recreational value.
The crater is a popular destination for visitors travelling through the Mývatn region.
