Hvaleyrarlón and Hvaleyrarhöfði are highly valued for both outdoor recreation and nature exploration. The mudflats support a rich variety of wildlife, with particularly abundant birdlife throughout the area.
The coastline has long been popular for outdoor recreation and offers excellent birdwatching throughout the year. Alongside the many regular species, visitors may occasionally spot rarer arrivals such as grey herons.
Protection Status
Hvaleyrarlón and Hvaleyrarhöfði were designated a country park in 2009. The designation protects the area’s rich coastal ecosystems and mudflats, which provide important habitats for birds, while ensuring that the area remains accessible for outdoor recreation, birdwatching and interpretation.
