Access and Information
Hrútey is a rocky island in the middle of the river Blanda, where the river flows through Blönduós. The nature reserve is bounded by the river.
There is no road access to the island, but parking is available on the riverbank northeast of the Blanda, with a pedestrian bridge crossing the river to the island. Along the river are visitor service areas with parking, a campsite, and rental cottages. A walking path runs from the service area along the Blanda and towards the coast.
Management and operation of Hrútey Nature Reserve are the responsibility of Húnabyggð Municipality.
The area is widely used by both local residents and visitors for outdoor recreation. Walking paths run throughout the island and are frequently used.
Protection Status
Hrútey was designated a nature reserve (fólkvangur) in 1975. The protected area covers 10.7 hectares.
The objective of the protection designation is to ensure free pedestrian access across the island while also protecting the area’s geological features, vegetation, and wildlife.
