Hlið is home to several bird species for which Iceland has a particular conservation responsibility, including brent goose, common eider, red knot, purple sandpiper and ruddy turnstone. These species are also listed under Annexes II and III of the Bern Convention.
The shallow coastal waters support a rich variety of seabed life, while extensive seaweed shores provide valuable habitat and feeding grounds. The country park also contains protected cultural heritage at Skjónaleiði.
Now we lend a hand to nature’s cause,
on a radiant spring day to the sound of the sea.
We leave the seals and birds in peace,
and extend the country park here at Hlið.

Protection Status
Hlið on Álftanes was designated a country park in 2002. In 2020, the protected area was expanded and the terms of its designation revised.
The designation protects the area’s rich birdlife, important bird habitats and biodiversity, while ensuring that it remains accessible for outdoor recreation and nature exploration. Its shoreline and surrounding waters offer excellent opportunities for birdwatching, exploring the shore and experiencing coastal nature at close range.
