Protection Status
Hleinar was designated a country park in 2009. The designation protects its natural shoreline and lava landscape, where native mosses and heath vegetation thrive, while preserving the area for outdoor recreation.
The area also has a rich cultural history, with remains of former settlement and traditional land use, including ruins, fish drying grounds, stone walls, enclosures and old tracks. Easy access makes Hleinar an excellent place for outdoor learning and nature interpretation.
The country park covers 32.3 hectares and forms part of the wider protected bird habitats of Álftanes and Skerjafjörður.
