Access and Information
Guðlaugs- and Ásgeirstungur are located in the northern part of the Kjal highland route. The nature reserve extends from Hofsjökull glacier to the confluence of the rivers Blanda and Haugakvísl in the southeastern corner of Blöndulón reservoir.
Within the nature reserve, all access to the breeding grounds of the pink-footed goose is prohibited from 1 May to 20 June.
Interpretation
Protection Status
Guðlaugstungur, together with Svörtutungur and Álfgeirstungur (Ásgeirstungur), were designated a nature reserve in 2005. The protected area covers 398.2 km².
The objective of the protection designation is to preserve an extensive and highly productive wetland area, which also constitutes one of Iceland’s largest and most diverse hummock wetland landscapes (rústasvæði).
More than 23,000 pairs of pink-footed geese breed in the area, making it the largest pink-footed goose breeding site in the world.
