Access and Information
Goðafoss is located on the river Skjálfandafljót in Þingeyjarsveit, near the farm Fosshóll. At Fosshóll, visitors will find a restaurant, souvenir shop, and restroom facilities.
Walking paths lead to the waterfall on both the eastern and western sides of Skjálfandafljót, with a pedestrian bridge connecting the two areas. The site offers good accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility.
Rangers in the Mývatn region monitor and manage the site throughout the year.
Protection Status
Goðafoss in Skjálfandafljót was designated a natural monument on 11 June 2020.
The principal objective of the protection designation is to preserve the site’s distinctive natural heritage, geological diversity, and the waterfall itself, including maintaining its natural water flow. Protection is intended to safeguard the area’s scenic beauty, unique characteristics, and recreational value.
The protected area covers 0.224 km².
According to the classification system of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the natural monument falls within Category III.
