Access and Information
Thenature reserve is located in Glerárdalur, above Akureyri.
Rest areas are available at two locations: one by Hlíðarfjallsvegur Road and the other near the southern boundary of the protected area, south of the river Glerá.
Protection Status
Part of Glerárdalur was designated a nature reserve (fólkvangur) on 6 June 2016.
The objective of the protection designation is to preserve Glerárdalur and the surrounding mountain landscape for public outdoor recreation, nature appreciation, and education.
The designation also protects an area that remains largely undisturbed and contains diverse geological formations and vegetation, thereby contributing to the conservation of biological diversity and geological diversity.
The Glerárdalur Nature Reserve covers an area of 74.4 km².
