Borgarholt is a hill on the Kársnes peninsula in Kópavogur. The hill is home to the Borgir rock formations, which have been protected as a natural monument since 1981. After the glacier retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, around 10,000 years ago, Borgarholt stood as a small rocky islet just offshore. Waves washed away the smaller stones, leaving behind the rounded grey basalt boulders that characterise the hill today.

Visitors are required to treat the protected area with care and respect.
The natural monument covers an area of 2.8 hectares. It is surrounded by a designated buffer zone covering an additional 1.3 hectares.
