Access and Information
Route 32 runs along the southern and northern boundaries of the protected area. Stangarvegur (Road No. 327) provides access to Stöng and Gjáin, while Hjálparvegur (Road No. 3361) leads to Hjálparfoss. Road No. 332 provides access to Háifoss. Parking facilities are available at Hjálparfoss, Stöng, and Háifoss.
The area is protected as a landscape conservation area, within which lie the natural monuments Hjálparfoss, Gjáin, and Háifoss and Granni.
Protection Status
Part of Þjórsárdalur was designated a landscape conservation area in 2020. The purpose of the protection designation is to protect distinctive geological formations and landscapes of national significance, recognised for their aesthetic and cultural value. Another objective is to promote the conservation of biodiversity through the protection of ecosystems, while also supporting the restoration of disturbed habitats through ongoing revegetation efforts and birch woodland restoration. The protected area in Þjórsárdalur covers approximately 58 km². Within the conservation area are three natural monuments: Hjálparfoss, Gjáin, and Háifoss and Granni. These natural monuments are protected due to their geological significance and biological diversity.
