Álafoss

Álafoss is a beautiful waterfall in the Varmá River, where the river winds through Álafosskvos in Mosfellsbær.

The Varmá River has been listed on the Nature Conservation Register from its source to its estuary, and both the river and the waterfall are closely connected to the rich industrial and sporting history of Mosfellsbær.

Hið friðlýsta svæði er 1,4 hektarar að stærð og nær yfir fossinn, töluvert svæði ofan og neðan hans og einnig skóglendi í svonefndu Álanesi sem er einn af eldri skógum bæjar­ins.

Árið 1896 hófst ullarvinnsla við Álafoss og vegna þeirrar starfsemi var áin stífluð ofan við fossinn. Myndaðist þá talsvert dýpi í ylvolgri Varmánni sem notað var til sundiðkunar og dýfinga. Má enn sjá leifar af tveimur dýfingarpöllum ofan við fossinn sem og leifar af stíflunni.

Protection status

Álafoss is protected as a natural monument to conserve the waterfall, its immediate surroundings and cultural heritage associated with the history and development of Mosfellsbær. The area is popular with both local residents and other visitors, and the designation also aims to safeguard its value for outdoor recreation and education.

The area is designated as a natural monument under Article 53(1)(2) of the Nature Conservation Act No. 44/1999.
